Sciatica & Lower Back Pain

Sciatica and lower back pain are both common conditions that can cause significant discomfort, but they are distinct in their causes and symptoms.

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. The pain typically starts in the lower back or buttocks and travels down one leg, often described as sharp, burning, or shooting. Sciatica is usually caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, often due to a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or a muscle spasm. In some cases, it can also be related to lifestyle factors, such as prolonged sitting or poor posture.

Lower back pain is a more general term that encompasses pain or discomfort in the lumbar region of the spine. It can arise from a variety of causes, including muscle strain, ligament injuries, poor posture, herniated discs, arthritis, or even stress. Unlike sciatica, which involves nerve pain radiating down the leg, lower back pain is typically confined to the lower back area, although it can sometimes radiate into the hips or buttocks.

Both conditions can be debilitating and affect daily activities. Treatment options for sciatica and lower back pain often include physical therapy, medication, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Chiropractic care, particularly spinal adjustments, can also be effective in relieving pressure on nerves, improving mobility, and addressing the root causes of both conditions. By realigning the spine, chiropractors can help restore proper function and reduce inflammation, providing relief and preventing future episodes.

“Doctor Sooley and his staff are amazing. I have been seeing them 5 years now. I can't say enough about how much they have helped me. I was having a lot of different issues. After seeing 12 doctors with no results, my new health care provider, who found a problem with my neck sent me here. He said, and I quote "I want you to go see Dr Sooley. He has this little gun looking thing that has helped a lot of people". So I went, and here we are 5 years later and I'm much, much better because of it. Give them a try. You won't be disappointed.”
